June 2019

16 brave Scouts, leaders and parents traveled north to raft the mighty Kennebec River in Forks Maine. We were so lucky because it turned out to be a 5000 CFS release from the dam which is nearly double a typical release!

As we entered the steep granite walls of the Kennebec Gorge large waves could be seen ahead. From this point on, the Kennebec River plunges 12 miles through a spectacular gorge with crashing class III – IV+ wave rapids like “Big Mama”, “Whitewasher” and “The Alleyway”.

The high point of the day was the run through class IV+ Magic Falls. There were many Class III + rapids from this point on offering plenty of time for swimming and enjoying the river including stopping along the river bank where our guides cooked up a steak and chicken barbecue with famous Moxie Beans.

We camped for 2 nights right on the shore of Lake Moxie. And when we say right one the shore, we mean it! We were greeted daily by the local ducks and the most beautiful sunrise you could ever imagine. Pictures DO NOT do it justice. At night after rafting, we had a great dinner and an awesome campfire. This was an truly an amazing trip, one that we can't wait to do again!
